Tomorrow I am planning on picking up a G3 at the surplus sale. What processor
speed will run OS X comfortably? I am fairly new to the MAC architecture and any
input would be helpful.

"G3 desktop beige $50

G4 Mac Silver tower $325"

Only a G4 will really run OS X safely. The G3's are supposed to be supported sometimes, but that follows the assumption that they are on a standard bus as opposed to Apple's NUbus architecture that was used for a time. Such a first generation silver G4 could range in speed from 400 Mhz to 1 gig, though I don't know how many of the faster ones they'll be ready to dump. I know the school of Music has gotten rid of some G4's, but we haven't dumped any in the school of Education. Something has to be pretty old and dead before we let go of it.

$325 is pretty expensive when you consider that they are selling them side by side with Pentium II >=350 @ $40, and Pentium III @ $75-$100.

now for the cheaper ones, you might be able to set them up in a cluster running a mac linux version, but it's been a while since I saw a mention of that, and it wouldn't be particularly effective beyond the experience of learning how to set one up.
