The head of the department himself taught it. His teaching was very lucid and logically provocative, though the language taught was C++, the demeanor of the learning environment was general in a Knuthian sort of way that made programming fun and at the same time invariant, since we learned principles rather than just C++ constructs. That was a good class. Anyway, excellent points Soren, the arguments you make are compelling and real.
