My HP 48 has a serial port right on the top of the calculator.  Just
connect that to your computer's serial port (or via a serial->usb
adapter) and talk to it via kermit.  There should be nothing special
required for it on any OS.

for the cable.  I've built several cables over the years.  I used to run
a getty on my serial port on my PC and then use a terminal emulator on
my HP so I could use it as a terminal!
