I'm moving this week, and Qwest has shut down my Internet access already (I'm already feeling the hurt), and say it won't be back on until December 1st (stupid Qwest). Like it would be for any decent geek, this is going to be very, very painful.

So I've been trying to get my modem to function so at least I can have dial-up (I'm not sure if that will be any less painful, *gulp*), but it's a conexant modem.

So I downloaded the Linux demo driver at Conexant, and it detects the modem fine and installs the drivers peachily, but when I try to use wvdial or ppp-watch, you can hear the modem physically dialing from the modem speaker, but if you pick up a phone extension, you can't hear the modem dialing on the line. It's as if the modem isn't plugged into the phone line, but I know it is because I have another phone going through that modem (plugged into the "Line Out" jack), which works.

If I do:
echo ATDT5555555 > /dev/modem

I get the same thing--I can hear it dialing from the modem's speaker, but when I pick up the phone, the modem isn't actually picking up the phone line when it dials.

If I do:
echo AT&F > /dev/modem
or anything of the like, it just sits there and doesn't respond (same if I open minicom or the like ... ATZ or AT&F don't get any response from the modem).

Any suggestions?

Or, alternatively, does anyone have a known linux-friendly modem they can let me borrow for two weeks? (Or sell for a small amount ... I'm getting desperate here!)

Thanks in advance,
Ross "I Check My Mail At School/Work" Werner
