[uug] Basic Email, SSL, and KMail

So, I "upgraded" to the new basic email for my BYU account, and set up KMail 
on my laptop (SuSE 9, KDE 3), without a problem. However on my desktop, a 
Debian stable box with KDE 2.something, it just hangs until timeout whenever 
I try to check my mail. the settings within KMail are identical.

I think it may be that, although KDE is set to use SSL, the box does not 
have an SSL package installed. So, do I need to install an SSL package on 
the desktop to get it to work? Or is it a lost cause with an older KDE 
install?
