Wow, a lot of replies.  Thanks everyone, and keep them coming if you
like.  Incidently, all of you rsyncers really should take a look at
dirvish and the others I mentioned in my first post.  It sounds like
you are redoing a lot of the work that they have done with the hard
linking incremental stuff.  Maybe I'll look into one of those more
closely, but I like what Josh is saying about simplicity (hopefully
it's not just irrational family bias).  I will keep reading your posts
and pondering what is the one true path for me, or something like
that.

Also, thanks for the hard drive recommendations.  I actually just got
an 80 GB one from some pricewatch company for $45
(unityelectronics.com).  My best pricewatch experience yet, I chose
their cheapest shipping option on Monday and it arrived yesterday!
