I know that the intentional design decisions were exactly that.
I still don't like how they worked out, and I still prefer not
to use Subversion.  (In fact, for my own non-work projects, I
/don't/ use Subversion, and I have no intention of using it at
any time in the forseeable future.)

If I *had* an 80 GB hard drive, it would be less of an issue
(although I'd still object).  Unfortunately, though, my laptop
drive is only 9 GB, and Subversion has to share with some other
things in that space (the operating system, multiple projects
that I'm working on simultaneously, etc...)
