I assume the error is Permission Denied ( My son's favorite error message, he gets it often :-) ).

Nope. here's the error:

rm: cannot remove `/usr/sbin/apmd': Operation not permitted

Things to check:

* is the filesystem OK?

I ran the following fsck from a rescue disk (it's ext3):

fsck /dev/sda2

it reported no problems.

* bug in the kernel?

Dunno how to check this. But I'm using a stock slackware kernel-- raid.s.

* is the HDD OK?

fsck comes back clean

* is your RAM OK?

What's the best way to test this?

I've had it happen to me before on ReiserFS when the RAM was bad.

Thanks for the help.

Ashley
