This is actually going to be your best bet. Doing a quick check on HP's
website, it turns out that the " 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/
125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)" is actually a Broadcom wireless card. It
doesn't get more annoying than that. ndiswrapper is your only free*
option, but you will need to make sure the following packages are
installed:

kernel source
gcc

As long as you have those, everything should go fine.

* use of the term free is more towards the free as in beer due to the
stickyness of the situation with wrapping windows drivers
