We tried to go to MySQL clustering this last January, and had issues. For now we've decided to stick with replication which as you
previously mentioned isn't the most robust thing there is. Part of
our problem is the people prior to me used MyISAM and we need to
convert to InnoDB. Needless to say we are evaluating migrating to
Oracle, because we really need triggers and stored procedures. We
can't afford to wait until MySQL can mature these features.

Have you looked at PostgreSQL? It has the features you need right now, without the high price of Oracle.
