I wrote a script to do exactly that about a year ago. You specify a list of schemes to use from your wireless.opts file, and then when your card gets "inserted" it automatically searches through all the schemes and picks the one with the best link. Maybe it will work for you. Look for wireless_auto on this page, and follow the steps.
