Are you connecting through a socket or a tcp port?
How can I tell?
If it's a port make sure the nonetwork or something like that setting is commented out.
In the PHP.ini? Everything is at the default, so most of the settings are blank....
Anyway, it's always better to use sockets for performance.
Hope it helps,

Is this a brand new install, or is this an upgrade?
I have noticed several instances of this error when trying to use a newer version of mysql with a .frm file from a previous version of mysql.
Its a redo... but I seem to have been able to solve it by deleting everything in the directory and running mysql_install_db.
One more problem, though. For some reason, php can't connect. I can connect when I'm using the box (just using the mysql client), but for some reason php comes back with the 'can't connect ....mysql.sock' error message. I've removed and re-installed via yum, but still no dice. Its really confusing because its up and working on the system, but php just can't see it....
