Today I went to help out at the booth because I signed up for today, and soon after getting there, I had to realize the truth. There was no booth.
Upon further inspection, the only people that bothered to sign up on the web site and help at the booth were myself, Scott Kraczek, and Erin Sharmahd. I should give a plug here to Topher too because I know he has been filling in where no one signed up. And Erin has been there for more than the times she signed up. I still have an email dated Feb 22, 2002 from Stuart Jansen (then the president) when I first asked about the UUG. He said there was about 10 members that wanted to see it succeed. Soon after my conversation with Stuart, many people came out of the woodwork that wanted to do great things with the UUG, myself being one of them. People like Art Moore, Dave Smith, Byron Clark, Evan McNabb, and many others. From these people came the booths and day long install fests where we had so many people installing we used up all the available IPs on the subnet we were using. So... what's up? Over 3 years ago when we first started the booths, we had 4 - 5 or more members helping out the entire time. Lots of CDs to hand out, lots of fliers passed out, it was great. The Software for Starving Students was started during this era and has grown and done great things. Now, this group is getting close to the way it was 4 years ago, where there are about 10 people that really care about seeing the club succeed. And this week shows me that there may be even less than that. I guess this group had a good run. I made some good friends and still joke about Mandrake with Stuart and Evan, but perhaps the UUG well has run dry. Then again, maybe i'm wrong and we'll see a better turnout at the installfest. -------------------- BYU Unix Users Group http://uug.byu.edu/ The opinions expressed in this message are the responsibility of their author.
