IMHO, Automatix is the right answer to several questions: How do I install Java? How do I play my MP3 files? How do I install the Flash plugin? How do I play DVDs?
One thing these questions all have in common is that a person who asks them usually hasn't done them before because they're relatively new to their operating system. Automatix is certainly a useful utility for newcomers. With that said, Automatix isn't just for the noobs. Sure, there will always be purists that don't trust anything that abstracts away too much of the process. For the person who enjoys managing their package repositories by hand, Automatix may not be the best solution. I'm not a newbie, but I still use it because I don't have the time or desire to go about rounding everything up by hand. I need the thing to work and work quickly. For me, the minimum usable installation includes tools for Java development and being able to play different media files. The quicker I can get my machine to that state, the better. -Brent -------------------- BYU Unix Users Group http://uug.byu.edu/ The opinions expressed in this message are the responsibility of their author.
