Lucky for me, I get to send some crashed hard drives off to be recovered for large sums of money.
The sad tale involved a linux server running RAID 1 using lvm, rsyncing to a backup server which also employed RAID 1 with lvm. Somehow the fates thought it would be funny to crash all four drives at the same time. Something fishy must be going on for that to happen, but all other parts of the boxes are working without issues (I first suspected power spikes etc. but thought that other parts of the computer would have died as well). They are all clicking very loudly. An offsite backup got a lot of data back, but it was over a month and a half old. I know this has been put to the list in years past -- at that time there was no company in Utah that could work on these dead and dying disks. My question today is if anyone has had any experience with some of these recovery companies and could give any recommendations. I contacted DriveSavers, they seem very professional and competent, but need $4,900 to get it back in 5-7 business days (faster service is available, 24 hour turnaround will run $15,800). DTI Data in Florida seems more reasonable at $1895 per disk (3-5 business day turnaround) where an additional $400 per disk will expedite it to 1-2 business days. Any experiences?
