I recently tried to cure some winrot to play TF2 on my old socket 740
board (3.5 years, time to upgrade). Not only did it take a lot of BIOS
tinkering to turn on my onboard promise RAID controller in "IDE
compatibility mode" (a necessary non-intuitive HW step I would have had
to figure out for Linux anyway) , but it also required the equivalent of
a promise RAID controller driver for IDE mode to recognize my new SATA
drive. My Marvell gigabit NIC also required the mobos driver CD, though
most distros get it set up just fine. Oh, and winXP also required me to
call M$ to re-register my computer with the drastic change of activating
a mobo feature that's been there all along.

I hope to avoid Vista altogether, though I suspect I should learn a
little for support and compatibility reasons.
