I renounce top-posting.
I think that, now, since people have read through my ideas on changing
meetings--I should let you know one other major thing I want to change.
Linux isn't just for CS majors. It's for all computer users of every
skill level and background. I'm hoping to have a "MIDI and songwriting"
meeting--and I'm gonna post fliers in the HFAC before that--and talk to
their department heads.
I'm a Physics major--and many of the professors miss the Linux days. I
don't believe there is a good reason to not advertise in the science
departments.
Artistic majors often use Mac OS anyway--why aren't they teaching the
rest of us more about GIMP and Blender (many of them use it)--and why
aren't we extolling the virtues of low-latency kernels for artistic
applications?
As president, I would work hard, with our secretary (Garrett Hyde), to
get the good word out there, and advertise the UUG to everyone who is
interested.
Also, remember that I'm at a bit of an advantage over the other
candidates--I'm in frequent face-to-face contact with Garrett, Jeff,
Jon, Peter, and Andrew McNabb (though Peter is moving, granted, but I'll
still have him over for Sunday dinners on occasion). You can't get
around that. Andrew and Peter have experience as the President, and
with running the UUG--and I'd still talk with them and seek their
counsel in a lot of matters (like speakers, people to contact for
meetings, ect.).
As for Garrett, Jeff, and Jon--I work with them just about every day.
It would be to the club's advantage to have so many people in leadership
in such frequent contact. Meetings would be more thoroughly planned and
prepared, the website would be more organized and better fill our needs,
meetings would be better advertised and publicized (with screen feeds
and audio, using a whiteboard instead of chalk board). You can't do
that as effectively if e-mail and a monthly meeting is your only form of
contact.
