Apparently you can run KDE on Windows too: http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/01/testing-kde-42-release-candidate-on-windows.ars They tried the RC and had some issues with sounds and Koffice. Which brings up a good point. Gnome and KDE each bring dozens of applications, helpers and widgets which aren't really part of a window manager, but can definitely increase the usefulness of a system.
