NORMALIZE + ENCODE
I'm interested in any methods to integrate normalize-audio as part of the KDE
rip-and-encode tools. I've got enough Gnome components installed that I've
chosen to use Grip where I can use specify to "filter" each wave file
with "/usr/bin/normalize-audio %w"

Is there a way to normalize each wav file with either soundKonverter or the
KDE "Extract & Encode?"

AUTO NOTIFICATION/LAUNCH
A while ago I disabled my KDE(3.5) auto-launch for music CDs. I decided to
bring it back and customize it to work *WITH* me (i.e. launch Grip).

It was a little counter-intuitive to re-enable the auto-launch, so I thought
I'd send this mini-how-to. I'm also hoping that someone will have an
explanation of a weird side-effect of enabling this feature.

0) Start -> Control Center
1) Peripherals -> Storage Media
2) in "medium types" choose "audio cd" to show the pre-assigned options for
music disks
3) click "Defaults." this seems to be the only way to re-enable notification
4) Remove or add any programs you do or don't want in your choices.
4.1 Click ADD
4.2 2x click Audio CD (so it moves to the right column)
4.3 click the wrench-icon (settings button) at the end of the "command" line
and choose the program from the list KDE knows about.

GOTCHA #1 typing "grip" there did not work. I did not try /usr/bin/grip
GOTCHA #2 make sure to use "grip %u" so the program knows which device use.
TIME-SAVER: You CAN choose the icon from the program, but choosing Grip (or
whatever) from KDE's list will auto-fill the icon for you.

5) "Ok" your way out of all open windows.
6) Next time a music disk is inserted, a window will notify you and offer a
choice of programs (including the newly added one) to use the disk. If you
ALWAYS use the same program, tick the box so KDE will always launch your
favourite program.

WEIRD SIDE-EFFECT
My entire music collection in Amarok 1.4 disappeared! The files were there of
course, but Amarok forgot where to look.

(All my music is on an external USB drive. I suspect that tweaking
the "storage media" settings somehow confused Amarok, or MySQL or whatever
god of tricks and pranks is involved--Loki or Fenris I suspect.)

Any ideas? If not, I'll keep asking the local druids and praying to Wotan for
answers.
