This gdm really is half-baked.  By the way, I found a workaround to
turning off the pointless annoying sound effects:

/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --direct \
    --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults \
    -t bool -s /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds false

That was way harder than it should have been.
