The best performance tunings for nfs have been mentioned, and if you
want even better small-file performance, you'll probably have to
change protocols.  Clustered filesystems or just plain iscsi would be
your primary options.  I expect you could get 5-10x the performance of
nfs, depending on what you switched to.
