Apparently there's a prerequisites_policy option to CPAN that might help. Here's a blog entry with a quick intro: http://rackerhacker.com/2009/01/01/cpan-automatically-install-dependencies-without-confirmation/ As the author points out, this can't use the system package manager, so in some ways it's better to install manually as you did earlier.
