Greetings GIS List,

I wanted to provide all of you with a summary of updates we've made to WAGDA this summer, before I depart for my new job in NYC. Here's the latest:

- 1990 Census Geodatabases
We've added these to compliment the 2000 Census geodatabases that we created earlier in the year. There are six personal geodatabases for each of the Puget Sound counties for mapping at the tract, block group, and block level, and one geodatabase for the State of Washington for mapping at the county, tract, place, and metro level. All of the 100% count (short form) data is included from STF1A (all of the data for most summary levels down to the block group level) and STF1B (subset of data for some summary levels down to the block level). The data and boundary files appear exactly as they did in 1990 - they have not been normalized to the 2000 Census. You can download the data from our geodatabase page:

We have also created some documentation particular to the 1990 geodbs:
http://wagda.lib.washington.edu/data/type/census/geodb/1990.html

Given the overwhelming number of census data and boundary file resources, we have created a matrix that shows the primary sources of data for Washington State that weighs the pros and cons of each source:

- Digital Geologic Data for Washington
We had this dataset for geologic features by quad on the old WAGDA page (pre August 2006) and have just migrated it over to our current site, with a new graphic download interface. The files were previously stored in a pre-version 7 ArcInfo format which was no longer compatible with newer versions of ArcGIS (9.2). So we have converted all of the files from coverage to shapefile format (thanks to Phil H for advice on how to do this). The download page:

-FAQ Pages and Access Tutorials
We consolidated the tutorial and FAQs into one FAQ page, and added a few new FAQs. Given the increasing use of personal geodatabases, we have created some new tutorials in pdf format for using Microsoft Access for: importing data into Access, importing shapefiles into Access, and concatenating fields in Access:

http://wagda.lib.washington.edu/gishelp/faq/#concat

-Western States Data
Given the number of questions we receive for getting data from other west coast states besides Washington, we have created a dedicated Western States data page with links to resources for Alaska, California, Idaho, and Oregon. The Oregon data that was previously on the US data page was moved here. http://wagda.lib.washington.edu/data/geography/us_west/

-Seattle and Shoreline updates
A new update for our Seattle data layers was added back in June, and data for the City of Shoreline became available on disc. We can ftp files from the disc by request. You'll need a UW net id to access these pages:

https://wagda.lib.washington.edu/data/geography/wa_cities/shoreline/
https://wagda.lib.washington.edu/data/geography/wa_cities/seattle/license.html

-Old site links removed
When we migrated from our old site to the new one in Aug 2006, we left a number of the old pages in place and created a number of redirects to guide people from the old site to the new one. All of the old content was pulled down for good this summer, including the redirects. So, you will want to update your links if you have not done so already.

That's it! Enjoy the rest of your summer,

Frank D
