Steve,

Depending on the tools you need to perform the anticipated work, you may be
able to buy in at the ArcView license level and then augment your GIS
capabilities with 3rd-party software such as X-Tools and ET Geowizards to gain
added tools not available at the ArcView level. This is the approach I have
taken and it is much less expensive than spending the money for an ArcEditor
license. There are free versions of both X-tools and ET Geowizards that
greatly extend one's capabilities at an ArcView license level.

Subject: [UW-GIS-L] Affording ArcGIS

Hi all,
I am responding to an RFP, in which I will be the PI. The RFP requires a good
deal of GIS work and I have found from doing similar work that I need at least
ArcEditor. ArcView does not have all of the functionality I will need. The
single seat cost for ArcEditor is $6,000 per year and after doing a draft
budget, I will not have enough to cover that.

Any ideas on how to get this software at price below $1,500? I have asked the
city putting out the RFP is I could get an extension seat from their license
and I am waiting to hear back, but I think the likelihood of that happening is
slight.
Steven
