Hello UW ArcGIS Users-

Late last week ESRI released ArcGIS 10.2 and it is now available to the UW
community. Unlike previous ArcGIS releases the 10.2 version will detect 10.1
and it's settings for a theoretically smooth upgrade process. No new
licenses are needed for server or desktop products. In my experience over
the last few days it went well for ArcGIS Desktop (as advertised), pretty
well for ArcGIS Server (web adaptor issues), and terribly for ArcGIS License
Manager (epic fail).

As with previous releases I personally do not recommend anyone with mission
critical or teaching responsibilities install the latest release of the
software until after the first service pack has been released (historically
a couple months after initial release). Previous initial releases have
corrupted Geodatabases, deleted metadata, and had various new geoprocessing
bugs. If you aren't the cautious type and like living on the edge here's
what you need to know to upgrade your software (I think!):

1. Download the software from ftp://software.gis.washington.edu/ESRI/.
Most people will only want
ftp://software.gis.washington.edu/ESRI/ArcGISDesktop/10.2/ArcGIS_Desktop_102
_134924.iso. Note that these links only work on UW networks. Those
off-network will need to connect with their campus IT person.

2. This is an ISO file so you either need to burn to DVD or use
software like ISOBuster http://www.isobuster.com/download.php or Virtual
Clone Drive http://static.slysoft.com/SetupVirtualCloneDrive.exe to install.

3. Run the Uninstall Existing ArcGIS Software utility from the
installation splash page to remove any pre 10.1 installs. ArcGIS 10.2 will
detect a 10.1 installation and upgrade it but anything prior to 10.1 must be
removed (with the exception of ArcINFO Workstation which can co-exist).

4. Install ArcGIS for Desktop

a. Select the Complete option

b. Install Python 2.7.3

c. If you have a 64 bit system, install background geoprocessing

5. Install any other products you need

6. The campus license servers are in the process of being upgraded. So
far only lic-arcgis.gis.washington.edu is serving 10.1 licenses but the
other campus servers should follow shortly.

7. If you have any problems along the way post a message to UW-GIS-L
at u.washington.edu so that the community has the benefit of learning from
your troubles (or my bad directions).

In the interest of trying to be a nimble research community (as opposed to a
bureaucratic behind-the-times Borg) I'm sending this out but be warned that
very little of this has been tested here at UW and there might be problems
along the way. If you can't be without functioning GIS software for a few
days then you should probably not upgrade until we've had more experience
with the new software and licensing.
