12 pt sockets are used for bolts that have a 12 point cap screw head.  They
are commonly found on the "inside" of heavy duty engines and also on bolts
that require a minimum of clearance for the head.

As far as tool brands go, keep in mind that Snap-on, Craftsman, Mac, Proto,
etc all have the same life-time warranty.  Which to me puts Craftsman above
the rest because of the lower initial cost and the convenience of returning
tools, as Sears is just about everywhere.
