Rick,
I am running mine like oem, have had no problems with it at all.  My friend 
has them set up without middle splicer (not oem) In my opinion they both stop 
the same. No advantage!  I would assume it has to with surface area. Reducing 
the area makes for more stopping power......But hey last I knew we didn't buy 
a superbike.
