I did an A/B test with a mercury stick and a TwinMax.  First, I did the best
job I could with a mercury stick and then tried to better it with a TwinMax.
The TwinMax showed the carbs still well off; and I could substantially
improve syncro with the TwinMax.  Another serious problem with the mercury
stick is that one must be very careful with throttle modulation.  A slight
abrupt throttle "bump" can send vacuum down and then up, which may cause the
mercury to be sucked into your motor.
