I work in an R&D lab for a company that manufactures
machinery for producing glass bottles. The glass hits the
machine at about 1900 degrees we work with all types
of lubricants and the general rule of thumb is, if the oil
isn't carbonizing because of excessive heat than
conventional petroleum based lubricants are used. The
synthetics were developed primarily to overcome heat
problems. I believe that the oil company marketing
departments have done a good job in convincing
people that they are neglecting the machinery they love
if they are not using " The Best".
I have to agree with Robert, I change oil every 1000 miles
and use the drain oil in the thing I dislike the most and
the damn thing (my lawnmower) won't die!
