Re #22: That looks like a pretty good, pretty representative microbenchmark to me. I wonder how things would turn out with something even cheaper than slice(), like push(). But I'd like to defer to cbruni on this evaluation.

Re #23: I bet that would be slower because the function can't be inlined.
