Almost surely my machine is indeed running out of memory. I think I have to go the cross-compiling route unfortunately.
The company that manufactures these boards offers a pre-built cross-compiling toolchain. Again unfortunately the version of GCC is 4.0.1, and attempting to cross-compile V8 with "scons host=arm" got mostly through but failed part way I assuming due to an old compiler version.
