I've never seen that problem. It works just fine for me:
$ make library=shared console=readline x64
$  l out/x64.release/lib.target/libv8.so
-rwxr-x--- 2 jkummerow eng 5.5M 2011-11-04 12:41
out/x64.release/lib.target/libv8.so
$  l out/x64.debug/lib.target/libv8.so
-rwxr-x--- 2 jkummerow eng 54M 2011-11-04 12:41
out/x64.debug/lib.target/libv8.so
