If Toyota says it'll tow 5000 pounds and your trailer weighs that or less,
why not?? Sure there's something bigger and better. A Cadillac Fleetwood
is certainly a better car than a Plymouth Neon, especially if you hit a
tree, but the reality is that the average guy can't afford to drive the
Fleetwood and has to settle for the Neon. I've towed my trailers with a big
and a little engine. The big engine works a whole lot better. However, I am
the former owner of a 1971 VW Campmobile. It was about the slowest, most
unsafe vehicle on the road. We sure loved it. We drove all over in it. We
held up traffic wherever we went and the thing was downright unsafe in a
cross wind. We had to compensate for it's shortcomings. Certainly the Toyota
is not going to be able to pull the trailer up a hill like a 460 Ford truck.
While you are down to 45 MPH on a grade the guy in the 460 Ford will still
be flying along at 70MPH. He's going to catch up and get stuck behind you.
He might get pissed off! I'd say that's not YOUR problem! Just drive
smart. Do like we did with our VW Camper: leave earlier, drive smarter, and
pull off the road frequently to let the faster cars by. Take curves easy and
slow down before you have to. Make sure you have a good hitch and a stable
trailer. Make sure the trailer brakes work very well. You might not get
there as fast as the guy with the Ford 460, but you'll get there just the
same!
I don't have the money to buy the best tow vehicle ....do you? I'm
NOT going to stay in the driveway either.
