Fellow list members:
For what it's worth, my big trailer has a spare tire in the factory
installed mount under the front floor and it has been riding there, unseen
and unused, for close to 40k miles. So has the spare in my truck, in this
case for over 144,000 miles.
I wouldn't argue that it is a good idea to carry a spare but given a
situation where weight and space are critical, I think I'd leave both spares
at home and carry a couple cans of tire inflator from Wal-Mart.
With the high quality of name brand tires we use today, with proper
inflation and frequent visual inspections, flat tires and blowouts are
almost a thing of the past. I can't remember the last time I had a flat
tire. I have had a couple of punctures but always noticed in time, removed
the wheel and tire, and had the tire plugged.
