Alvaro is correct, Vagrant uses TAR compression to greatly reduce the size of the output box, because syncing around 10GB+ files is painful, not to mention rather difficult using any FAT32 formatted media. We did some testing using Vagrant's sister product Packer, and even at a compression level of 1 (minimum) it took a 7-10GB file down to around 2.5-3GB after compression.
