My intent was that the normal way to use XML mode would
be   --xml=yes --xml-file=whatever -q  so normally the
non-XML output would be completely silent, apart from
critical error messages, primarily to do with the debuginfo
reader failing in some way.

That way, if the normal output is empty, that's fine; if
it's non empty, then there has been some critical failure
which should be brought to the attention of the user.  This
removes the need to do any postprocessing/filtering of the
normal output in XML mode.
