However, it is also true that many Muslims living in Sinhala areas speak Sinhala, viz the South. Furthermore, many of the Aristocratic Muslims living in Colombo speak English at home mainly because of the influence of the British Raj upon their lifestyle. One of the main reasons for the majority of Muslims in Sri Lanka to have adopted Tamil as a language is because of the fact that their Arab ancestors, who were traders, wee located mainly on the coastal belts f the island and were involved in trading with the Tamil trading communities from South India who controlled the trade in the island during the early times. The Sinhalese were involved, mainly in agriculture and also concentrated their societies inland rather than on the coastal belts. The fact that the majority f he Muslims in Sri Lanka descended from the Arabs cannot be disputed as proved without any doubt by the late ILM Abdul Azeez in his refutation and criticism of Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathen's assertion in Parliament that all Muslims were of Tamil origin in his Ethnology of the Moors of Ceylon, Ref: http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw/ethnomoor.html Regards Fazli Sameer Webmaster Sri Lanka Genealogy Website http://www.rootsweb.com/~lkawgw ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 3 Date: Tue, 17 Jan 2006 04:53:43 -0000 From: mforumsl Subject: Portuguese encounter Reply to Satkurunathan 2006-01-17 Portuguese encounter Reply to Satkurunathan By Janaka Perera Raveen Satkurunathan writing in the Asian Tribune of January 8, 2006, seems to have got his wires crossed about the conference on the 500th Anniversary Portuguese Encounter held at the BMICH Colombo on Dec.10-11, 2005. His comments display either total ignorance or total disregard for what was actually discussed at the conference. He goes at a tangent talking of Gujaratis, Veddas, Mahawansa, Sinha Bahu clan, Diaz Bandaranaike clan, the Celts, Normans Danes, the JVP, etc. etc. issues that had nothing to do with the confab. Perhaps Satkurunathan is so obsessed with the 'evil' of so-called Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinism that he is incapable of any rational thinking. Anyone who attended the BMICH conference will know that the topic of discussion was Portuguese colonization in Asia with special emphasis on Sri Lanka and Goa. The Indian participants comprised V. Swami, Shrikant Ramani and Z. Khan. No conference participant shifted the blame for all of Sri Lanka's current social ills on to the Portuguese colonizers or alleged that they caused today's Sinhala-Tamil problem a subject which was not a topic of discussion. The issue was not who suffered more under the Portuguese administration Sinhalese or Tamils - but the adverse impact it had on Sri Lanka's pre-colonial society as a whole and some of its effects that are seen today in relation to the country's ancestral religion and culture (both Hindu and Buddhist). Among the papers presented at the conference was one on oppressive proclamations, decrees and laws enacted by the Portuguese authorities in both Goa and Sri Lanka, and cited as examples various instances of acts of persecution, discrimination and destruction of places of worship of Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims. The underlying theme of the paper was the cognizance of the irony that some Western countries that champion human rights today and lecture on religious liberty to descendants of the persecuted victims of the Third World are the very same countries that had in the past systematically violated the human rights of the colonized non-Christian societies. The conference was the result of a year's exhaustive study by the Portuguese Encounter Group (that included Sinhalase, Tamils and Muslims) on the Portuguese colonization in Sri Lanka. Every major historical event leads to a chain reaction that is felt for centuries. It is in this context any sensible person ought to study history - whether it is Portuguese colonization or any other subject. Satukurunathan talks of positive aspects of Portuguese colonization. Every one with an iota of knowledge of Sri Lanka's colonial period knows that Portuguese rule was the worst in comparison to the mixed blessings of the Dutch and British colonial regimes. The latter at least left us with some worthwhile legacy in the form of architecture, legal systems, canals, road and railway networks, a global language among others. During their rule violence and armed conflicts were far less when compared to the Portuguese period. Satkurunathan is free to let his mind run riot. But If he truly wants to ascertain facts about the BMICH conference he may contact Hema Goonatilake so that he can at least have a look at the extracts of what was discussed at the conference. http://www.asiantribune.com/show_news.php?id=756 ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 4 Date: Wed, 25 Jan 2006 17:04:41 -0000 From: "RVS" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Portuguese encounter Reply to Satkurunathan Hello, Thanks for forwarding Janaka's reply. At lest I got someone upset, but what I want is the Sinhalese to think about the genesis of this ethno religious strife. It is because of the machinations of a segment of the coastal Sinhalese with South Indian heritage who want to be superior Sinhalese via the Virulent Buddhist (VB) message that are holding the country ransom. First their target was Muslims in 1915, then it is the Tamils and in between the Muslims became a target too and are of secondary importance now as the perennial 'other'. This 'other' is needed to keep VB relevant to the common man. Once they are done with SL Tamils, no matter what the Mulims do to assimilate, they too will becoame a target of the JVP/JHU unless they become Buddhists. This nature to overshoot ones new found nationalism by new adherents to a creed or identity is common across the world. We just have to identify it for what it is. Napoleon was a superior French, but he was a Corsican. Hitler was a superior German, but he was an Austrian. Stalin was the most Xenophobic Russian but he was a Georgian by birth. Even in neighboring Tamil Nadu, the ardent Tamil nationalists usually are the Telugu naiks including EVR, Karunanidhi and Y Goplaswamy. Human beings act more out of s sub conscious level rather than rational. So I understand Janaka being upset because after all he too carries a Iberian surname (Perera) and possibly of Karave/Durave/Salagama origins. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 5 Date: Wed, 25 Jan 2006 17:24:03 -0000 From: "RVS" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Tamil Speaking Muslims of Sri Lanka Majority of Muslims of Sri lanka are Tamil Speaking but not Tamils. But Muslims of Tamil Nadu are Tamil Speaking are Tamils. Identity is what one individual or community decides for what ever reason it is. There are large percentage of Sinhalese with Tamil racial origins, but except a very few like Colvin R De Silva (a prominent politicians of yore) they will not accept it and they are Sinhalese. This is true of Tamils with Sinhalese racial origins too. Muslims of Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu Coromondal coast, Mapillas of Kerala, Swahilis of east Africa and Huis of China are a by product of Middle Eastern (Aramaic, Arabic, Yemeni, Omani, Persian but Islamic...) commercial and marital interaction with indigenous people. They carry the cultural and genetic traits of both sides. My point is for Muslims of Sri Lanka to speak Tamil exclusively (not Malayalam, Arabic, Urdu or Sinhalese) has to be because majority of them came from the Coromondal coast of Tamil Nadu. Tamil was not the Lingua Franka of commerce before the Arabs came, Tamils were part of the great Indic commercial groups, infact they were a minority amongst Indian merchant guilds. In no way were the Tamil merchant guilds were able to impart their language on an ascending and eventually superior Arab commercial class. The only reason for the Muslim merchant class in Sri lanka to speak Tamil or Sonkam is because they were already Tamil speaking in India. Arabs were a minority where ever they went so in East Africa, it is the Bantu Swahili with a lot of Arabic/Persian loan words that became the dominant language. In China, the numerous Hui people speak Manadarin, in Kerala they speak Malayalam, in TN they speak Tamil (actually Sonakam a dialect of Tamil with Arabic/Persian loan words) In Sri Lanka they speak Sonakam not a Sinhalese hybrid with Arabic like everywhere else.
