ESI is indeed not impressive, but it is also aimed at a very narrow
market which Varnish is not (3rd party but non-adverserial caching)

The only truly precise way to characterize varnish, IMO, is "A
webserver that uses HTTP to get at its content".

That description on the other hand, is so general as to be almost
without meaning.
