I haven't had this problem lately with the newer versions of Vassal but I used to. The best way to deal with it is to cut your map into at least two parts and then combine them using the multiple map feature. It should work. Once you load the game then just save it as a game file and when you load it again your map should appear as one piece. Try it. It might solve your problem. I guess it's just a quirk of the Vassal memory managenment. Another fix might be to adjust the memory size in the buildfile. I find cutting the maps to be more reliable. One more fix would be to use png files and reduce the color depth of the map image if that is possible. Good luck.
