If all you want is for the pieces to look circular, just make the image corners transparent in your paint program. If you really want the pieces to be non-rectangular---i.e., the piece boundary is not a rectangle---then you need to add the Non-Rectangular trait to those pieces, and set an image to be the mask. If you already have the pixels which are not part of the piece image set to transparent, then you can use the piece image as its own mask. (A good example is the Goblin piece in the tour module which comes with VASSAL. Compare what you get when you have a Goblin without the Non- Rectangular trait (the default) to what you get when you add the Non- Rectangular trait and mask the Goblin image with itself.) -- J.
