Gary, thanks a million for your answer to my distress call...

I linked to your proposed solution and, unfortunately, don't
understand it.  Specifically, it directs that if one is using the
stand-alone version of Vassal (I am), one must create a file named
"vassal.bat" containing certain lines and then create a shortcut to
this file and run it.

This makes next to no sense to me. I understand that, perhaps, it is
directing that I create, in Notepad (or something) such a batch file,
but where is this file placed?  How does it run and when?

I understand that this is all crystal clear to a knowledgeable user,
but I don't fit that bill.

Finally, given that I own and run a small restaurant (takeout), I
don't know how many times I would have given that up just to play a
couple of games of NFL Strategy.  One never knows how good one has it
until it's gone...
