The problem seems to be that each instance of VASSAL is sharing a
configuration or preferences files somewhere.  When I launch one
instance and change the name and password, close that instance, and
fire up the other (which is using a different copy of the mod), the
changes show up there.  I wonder how to get two truly independent
instances of VASSAL running.

I am, by the way, running Mac OS X 10.4.9 on a G4 1,48GHz Mac Mini
with 512 MB of RAM, in case it matters.  7 Ages module version 0.2,
VASSAL engine version 2.9.9.
