Patch committed with a couple of indentation/spacing fixes as http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/29117 . A required fix to settings saving is in http://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/29116 . I still haven't enabled it by default though, as my quick attempt at removing it from the drop-down box in the GUI had the side effect of disabling VDE for a VM as soon as any setting was changed. I don't have time to investigate this just now - if anyone (Renzo? James?) can produce a patch which will remove it from the GUI drop-box by default without this side effect then I will be able to enable VDE in our builds. I think it would be fine to show VDE in the drop-box if the user has already enabled it via VBoxManage (this can also happen while the GUI is running).
