Technically I think that they just don't set a root password (and lock
the password to prevent it being set) which prevents direct logins as
root.  As you discovered, you can still access the root account
indirectly using "sudo su" or whatever.

I think that at least Redhat/Fedora, Debian/Ubuntu, SUSE and Mandriva
have been using /media for automatic mounts for a few years now, so this
would not be Ubuntu-specific.  Several versions of Ubuntu
used /media/cdrom<n> rather than /media/<volume name> as most Linux
systems do, but the current Ubuntu seems to have switched to the common
practice.

I suppose that the real question here is how much should we document
things which are "common knowledge" for a particular distribution, given
that we deal with quite a number of different ones, and that some
things, like the media mounting location, differ in different versions
of the same distribution?  I personally tend to treat the things you
pointed out as basic knowledge for anyone who uses the command line in
Ubuntu.
