I learned a bitter lesson before.   Although I fixed the problem finally it 
took 
me several days.  Therefore this time I must work carefully.  Otherwise I 
prefer 
running the existing version.

No.  I only backup the data, important configure files and the source .vdi.  In 
case of the failure of HD which fortunately it didn't happen I just reclone the 
VMs on the source .vdi, and copy the data and config files on them.

did that when upgrading VBox (on Windows host), I even didn't uninstall the
old version, I just installed the new one. This has worked for me 5 or 6
