Big thanks go to `Bruce' (who wishes to remain anonymous) on a
suggestion to resolving the issue.
At the top of each `Digest', I've configured `mailman' to add the
following heading:

Please do not reply to a `Digest' messages without
minor changes on how you reply.
If you'd like to reply to a `Digest' message,
please do the following:
1) Change the `Subject' of your response so it
reflects the message you're replying, and
2) Delete everything from the response except for
the one message you're replying.
In other words, do not include the entire
`digest' in your response.
