Thanks Alexey. The problem I see is that I bought this system in 2008.
I can buy an AMD Opteron 2216 nowadays, but I can't be sure the cpu
will be of the same stepping number.

What I'm asking, in fact, is if there's the concept of "stepping
numbers" on AMD Opterons as well.

On Intel Pentium IIIs the stepping number was an alphanumeric code, like "CB0"

Maybe on AMD Opteron the issue is moot because of loadable microcode errata?
