I'm looking for insight to optimizing my server. I currently have two Windows virtual machines and one Linux VM on a Linux host. I've currently got 16GB of RAM.
Given the choice between leaving available RAM for Linux host processing, Linux host caching, or client caching - where should I push my currently available "spare" RAM? Under my current configuration, my Linux server (nginx & php) has 1GB, one Windows 2003 has 512M (it's used by a single remote desktop user for contacting remote dial-up hosts), and the other Windows 2003 has 4GB (serves Quickbooks to multiple remote desktop users). So - 5.5GB reserved to Virtualbox. At the moment, my host shows a cache of 5GB, and 3GB free - so call it another 2.5GB used for the host processes. I never see the memory usage in any of the guest VM's approach their current limits. So is it better to leave the RAM available for the Linux host for overall caching, or would any of the VM's benefit from increased client caches themselves? -- Daniel ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond.
