DOS based serial software expect COM ports to be in the COM1 to COM4 range.

USB to serial adapters usually give you a high port number (COM11 in my
netbook, even if there´s no COM1-COM4).

However, that can be setted on the devices´s preferences (hardware manager)
on the host side.

Also make sure the adapter cable is a good one, that implements hardware
flow control, (FTDI chipset are the best) and not a cheap Prolific based
one...

That´s what I can think of, off the top of my head. Hope it helps. Good
