First, make sure you select "Windows 7" as the OS type.  That should make it 
default to the correct settings of IDE vs SCSI, etc.

Second, make sure you're not assigning more disk space to the guest than what's 
actually available in your system.  Always leave at *least* 10-20G free in your 
hard drive.

Clean your CD with a non-abbrasive cloth.  (No paper towels or tissues.)  If 
you're using an ISO file, re-download.

Don't use any "illigitmate" copies of the windows CD.  Only use the one 
distributed by MS.

Don't use an OEM version, like the Dell or HP windows installer CD.  Those 
often have customized drivers special for their hardware, and since you're not 
using their hardware, often times it will fail.

Hope some of this might help.

Point is:  You're having an IO error.  Fix the IO error.
